Location based services, GPS in India

I will be posting a series of blogpost on this topic. My interest in doing so is to gather some concrete evidence on current state of LBS and GPS in Indian markets. Generally data is used to supports human hunches — nevertheless I am going to share an intuition of mine.Following are some factors that I have seen playing role in slow development or smaller penetration of technologies alike

  1. Culture vulture: Having been in state for 3 years and coming back, I see major difference in how people navigate. I don’t remember a day in US that I have lived without searching for something on Google Maps. Or not having seen someone take a GPS. But in India what you do is pretty simple, roll your window down, smile to some stranger and ask for directions. Another thing is people use landmarks to navigate instead of street names.
  2. Proximity of Points of Interests: In states most of points of interests are decently far off from each other, where as given population I would guess 70% of points of interests are in close proximity. Hence requiring little search effort forget about getting directions part.
  3. Nature of Street: Indian roads majorly follows no logic, or even it there is its not consistent with other states. Where as in states you have streets broken down in to blocks, intersections etc.

Its interesting how big companies like Microsoft and Google are innovating despite these constraints. The fancy technical term for it is Landmark based routing.
